To seek greatness is the only righteous vengeance.

About This Quote

To seek greatness is the only righteous vengeance. This is another famous quote from Shakespeare. It is ironic, because the pursuit of greatness is often perceived as a vice. But is it? Not necessarily.

To seek greatness is not to seek to be better than others, but to seek to do good. This pursuit of greatness can bring great happiness and success, but only with the suffering of suffering itself. When we choose to pursue greatness, we must also choose to suffer suffering itself.

We can experience suffering for suffering’s sake. Of course suffering can be avoided with great care and effort, and that ultimate suffering can be avoided simply by abandoning our quest for greatness. But what of the suffering we will experience along the way? Surely we must suffer if we are going to achieve greatness.

To be involved with suffering at all is noble, and I would argue that it is a way of seeking greatness.
